my interview coach said I should say that I've been looking since then but I don't want to lie and it would also appear that I haven't found a job in 5 months if I did this. I appreciate your response. I could use some wording that sounds precise and professional without saying (" I was being a Mom and enjoying my kids full time for 5 months") Thanks to all!

I think that your interview coach is DEAD WRONG! It is a great thing that you were able to and sacrificed to be out of the work force when you thought it was necessary to be wiht your children. I think that telling someone that you were a career mother or father is a GOOD THING! It's not like you don't have any job skills, you were only out of the work force for five months. I assume that you needed that time for a new baby, or a stressful time the children's lives, etc., but if it was just for shits and giggles and for some breathing room for you, I think that telling a prospective employer the truth is good.

I am commending you for staying home and giving your children some quality time. Don't apologize for it.

I took several months after I had my child, when I was interviewing I just told them I wanted to spend some time with the child. I think this was a good move since in the job I ended up with, they are really supportive of taking time off to care for her, not asking me to stay late when I need to pick her up from daycare etc.
Wording: I did not feel ready to go back to work after the birth of my child until now / I did not feel I could give 100% to my job so soon after the birth of my child and would not have been comfortable giving any less.

I lost my job 2 weeks before I found out I was pregnant. When I finally went back to world of interviewing(about a year after he was born) I told the truth that I was raising my family. The companies that do not respect you for having a family are not worth working for. Best of luck in your search.

I don't see a problem with what you said. I took 3 years off with my daughter. When I started interviewing again, I just said, I was blessed enough to be able to stay at home with my daughter and spend those early years with her. Now I would like to get back into the workplace and your company would be a good match for me.

First off the coach is wrong to have you lie. Be honest. Just say "I was taking time off to spend with my children and I am now interested in looking to get back in the work force."

You can put on your resume that you where self employed for 5 months, and when they ask what type of employment then you can explain you took time off to be with your children.

I would just be as open as you were in your question...."I was off being a mom and enjoying time with my kids"...and as the first answer said....if they don't respect that they are not worth working for in the first place.

I agree with you. I wouldn't lie during an interview. Just tell them the truth!
