ok, for my birthday my parents are considering getting me a dog. I have made the decision i am going to rescue a dog rather then buy one. So thats that. I am trying to figure out what kind of breed to get. I am definetly not going to get a huge dog. I am leaning toward a smaller dog. Something that I can carry around. I do not want a dog that will die quikly. I would get it in May. May 4-6 to be exact. But in order for me to get one, i need to pick a certain breed and do reseach. It will need to be pretty easy to train. And it will also need to be playful and it will have to be ok during the day when I am at school. I need a dog that is sweet too.

Thank You all. I am not looking for a stuffed animal either

Instead of focusing on specific breeds, focus more on behavioral characteristics, personality, and time commitment that you're looking for.

1. Make up a list of requirements for the dog - behavior, temperament, space requirements, activity level, grooming time, training level, etc.

2. Make up a list of nice-to-haves - for me, this was gender and color among other things.

3. Make up a list of things you absolutely do not want.

4. Take all three of these lists to the local shelter and/or rescue and meet with an adoption coordinator to discuss what you want from a canine companion.

5. Let the adoption coordinator pick several dogs that match your "ideal dog" template.

6. Play with and socialize with them all, and let your heart choose the right one.

Your best bet would be to visit the AKC website. You can research numerous breeds that would fit your needs. The website also has links to each breeds recognized club or organization. Those organizations usually have a rescue site where you can adopt the breed you choose. It will save you money and provide a home for a needy dog.

Take that test.

Then when you decide on wich one of the breeds you like that the test gives you, go to www.akc.org, www.dogbreedinfo.com, and google and look Type in the the breeds name and info after it, e.g Maltese info, and research from there. Also try and find a sight all about the breed. Thats that. Oh, and what hogman said about organizations. w You could also try- petfinder.com or org
