Don't blame the soldiers, seamen and airmen... most go into the military for various reasons, recruited young and often idealistic and ignorant. Once in you MUST execute orders from CINC on down unless you want to pay a heavy price for "disobeying a direct order" OR you can prove, beyond a shadow of a doubt that the order given is "unethical and illegal". Not many people have the strength to stand up to the dragon...
Oh and "the CHURCH" is not in charge of this country really, no matter how much people want to fantasize that it is. The orders for such things come from the chain of command and trickle down and the Pope isn't in the chain of command...

Tragically the Great Lie War (aka the Iraq war) is just that, a lie. Perpetrated by Christians, not so much in the name of God, as Revenge and Cover up. Revenge for Gulf War 1, and Cover up for the U.S. complicity in many of Saddam's war crimes.
As for breaking rules of the Church, when did that ever stop any religious zealot of any faith.

as of the soldiers, they have no alternative, they want to leave Iraq much more than the Iraqis want them to.
But for Bush, i dont really think he is a christian, he only claims to be one. The Pope was against the war in Iraq, but bush claims God told him he is doing the right thing,..... funny

I would say that George Bush's assumption of divine right and his belief in pre-emptive war borders on Heresy.
Unfortunately, in a US context, religion, patriotism, and a sense of duty and responsibilty become conflated into one ideology.
At the end of the day, we all make judgement calls about how our practices measure up to our ideals.

What rules of the church? Where is it written that one cannot protect their families and way of life by serving your country and living by your countries laws and engaging in war?

The Bible tells us to respect our Leaders and pray for them. The blood we she ed is on their hands not ours in times of war. Let me ask you a question. For all of you who are against this war.
Would you rather fight it there in Iraq or here in our Homeland. Because one thing if for sure. There will be a fight. There Terrorist will not give up their desire to destroy us. So, do you want the bombs and weapons going off in your yard or over there!!!!

War is a reality among us, because there is war within us. James 4:1 says, “What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don't they come from desires that battle within you?”
As a result, Jesus said, “There will be wars and rumors of wars . . . such things must happen . . . nation will rise again nation . . .” (Mt 24:6-7).

They will tell you it is a just war i.e. war against tyranny etc. etc. but even the Pope called the war illegal as Sadaam did not attack the U.S. They will also tell you that thou shalt not kill is meant to be interpreted as thou shall not murder, and this justifies the death penalty too, not abortion or euthenasia oddly enough though.
