I'll just say this:

The cakes and wine (or ale, or juice) are the way to share what has been done in the Great Rite by the Priest and Priestess, with the rest of the circle attendees. At the end, a small amount of each is returned to the Earth in thanks and to encourage the fertility of the Earth.

The cakes and ale are the libations to the spirit and the beings that assisted in the rite. Also, it is shared among members of the coven as well.
