It depends on where you go, A lot of people are put into hospital psych wards as they are not as much of a threat to others like some.
You have a normal room like in a hospital, barred windows the doors in the ward all lock a bed a room quite normal. Rooms for recreation and such.
In mental institutions though it is a bit different, a lot like the hospitals in the less severe cases but it is all one building instead of a hospital wing, some places have a "silent" room, a place where you go if you need time alone you an go there willingly and sometimes you are put there against your will if you are a threat to others and monitored by security. You can stay as long as you like if you go in their willingly, there is a mattress if you wish to stay there over night , but this is only in some places.
Higher security ones you do not have a recreation room of course it is more like a prison bed in each room doors that allow doctors to easily see what is going on in them and such.
Padded rooms aren't commonly used anymore as now if you are out of control they will strap you to the bed for a while until they think you are of more control to your self all though there are still some cases where patients will hurt them selves or such and cannot be be tied down all day so some still have an odd padded room here or there so the patient is too far deteriorated they will not bash their head open on walls or such.
It depends on the place and location and lvl of security, most are just like hospitals where the patients of each area can mingle at certain times of the day, all places are locking of course and some places you are treated more as a prisoner.

Yes, I have actually been in the mental hospital several times for Bipolar manic episodes and depressive episodes.

They are not "cells"....in fact, the "psych ward" is usually one or more floors in a normal hospital. They lock the doors, but there are beds and bathrooms, etc. It looks like a hospital room, except the windows are barred and there are no sharp or dangerous objects around.

If you are not suicidal, you might be able to have your own room. Otherwise, you usually have a roomate. They do bed checks at night and how often depends on if you are "high-risk" for hurting yourself.

Sometimes there are different "wards" on the pysch floor. For example, addicts might be in one ward, depressives might be in one ward, and pyschotics in another ward.

We got 3 meals a day, 4 snacks a day, had a recreation room with a TV. There was a VCR and some of the people watched movies.

We did crafts and made stuff and had therapy, etc.

It really is not so bad. I perfer NOT to be there, but when I needed to be stabilized quickly, it has really helped.

You are in a normal room, with a bed a washroom and sink, a closet, a desk and chair and a side table. There are no strings on the blinds, or holders for the toilet paper or hangers. The toilet tank lid is secured and there are no garbage cans. Patients are free to use the phone, leave with family for visits, watch TV, hang out with each other. It is a normal hospital ward, except the unit is restricted and locked down at all times, you can only enter or exit with an ID card or being buzzed in.

They aren't cells, they are just hospital rooms like any other place in the hospital. You can't really do much other then sleep or watch TV. You can read too, but they don't have much of selection. It's really boring and the people treat you like crap. The place I was in sucked and I will never go back. Even if I get suicidal again.

They are usually plane white brick walls with tile floors and thick glass doors. And contrary to popular belief, the walls are not padded!
