In an environment that physical strength ensured better chance for survival, men take the burden to protect their family.

Revenge is an act to stomp out what was percieved as unjusted. Most revenges are made by giving physical harm to the party that carried out the unjusted action.

Therefore, men are more innate to take revenge.

Harm leads to anger, which is a natural defense mechanism. If that anger is carried along too far, it becomes a desire for revenge. It's like the feathers on the peacock; they're larger than would be useful, but they developed in this way as an exaggeration of a natural tendency through the mixing of the genes.

Man does not need revenge. He wants revenge. Big difference.
Revenge has nothing to do with natural selection. It is a learned phenomena.

It's natural to protect what is ours, or what we perceive as ours. If someone wrongs you, you should feel a natural inclination to lash out at them, to repay the wrong in order to make your loss or hurt less painful.

But that being said, I don't think it's a function of natural selection. Revenge doesn't engender any positive changes in our physiology or environment. For that matter, neither do fetishes or belief systems or any number of the things we humans do, for whatever crazy reasons.

Natural selection can't explain that, just like it can't explain bravery, selflessness, man's need for spirituality, emotions in general, conscience, or even society!! Humans do things that, while they may be for the good of humanity in general, are actually bad for the individual. According to natural selection, any organism that evolved one or more of these traits would die, and the traits would die with it.
