Treats are nice, but dogs also love to be praised in a very friendly and cheerful voice. Rub their head or face between your hands and be very happy with them. You should really do this even when treats are given.

anywhere your pup seems to like it! there is no right or wrong way to pet your puppy. if he trys to get away from you or something, he probably doesn't like it, if he does the opposite, then he does. most dogs have a spot they really like to be scratched or pet, you'll just have to try them out! also, talking sweetly is good praise, as is playtime or giving them a favorite toy or bone.

Give him/her a hug, use a soothing voice when you speak to it, give it a toy it likes, scratch behind the ears, rub the neck, head and back.
