They are hot, and I'm wiccan and watching Charmed actually as i speak....however....them portraying witches as fireball throwing, dry ice potion brewing, orbing, freezing and the other things they do along those lines irritates me. Witches are just simple, quiet, secretive and harmonious individuals that like their privacy and like to not be discriminated against or feared.
The recent surge could just be due to the fact that more and more witches are going public with their faith and it's not as secretive as it used to be. That and I'm sure that the shows like Sabrina, Bewitched, Hocus Pocus, The Craft and Charmed do help the "teenagers" to defy their parents.
It's sad that those shows, the confused teenagers and not to mention the Bible give us real Wiccans/Witches a bad rap.

Real Wiccans are nothing like that. TV and movies don't even scratch the surface of the Wiccan religion. They just take bits and pieces that sound or look cool and/or scarey and make the rest up.

Not.
Though it may account for the upsurge in interest.
Wicca is an initiatory religion - one cannot just decide to be it any more than one can just decide that one is a priest..
That is not to say that it's the only valid path of Witchcraft, though. There are LOTS.
In any case, it might explain the silliness I see in some people who *think* that it's all about TV-style magic spells and nonsense like that.

I became a bartender from watching the original shows of Cheers. I have seen that show, and I haven't become a witch. Nevertheless, I am wary of some people, and I wouldn't put anything past them.

People that convert to Wicca because of a ******* TV show are idiots. They're fluff-bunnies I think is what the real Wiccans call them.

If it is, then folks are in for a disappointment when they learn about Wicca and realize it has pretty much NOTHING to do with the stuff they do on "Charmed".

No, anyone who switches religion because they saw it on a Television show, isn't a true convert. They're just playing for attension.
