it depends on how well the skin is taken care of as well as where the tattoo is located. my tattoo artist touches up all tattoos after they are finished. but the best way to ensure a tattoo stays looking great is to keep it out of the sun. sun screen does not protect your ink from being broken down by the sun.

As already suggested there are a few different factors that will determine how often it requires touch ups.

Another important factor that hasn't been mentioned in skin type. Some people will take and retain the ink a lot better than others.

I wouldn't worry about it too much now unless you had your tattoo done over 10 years ago and have exposed it to lots of sun.

It mostly depends on how much sun damage your tattoo has recieved. I have 3 and the "youngest" tatoo is 8 years old. I have never had any of them touched up and they still look nice and bright. I am also rarely in the sun. I have reddish hair and lots of freckles so too much sun isn't an option.

If your tattoo is starting to fade get it touched up but you shouldn't have to get it touched up before 5 or 6 years minimum. Be careful of the sun it is brutal not only on your skin but also on your ink.

My first tattoo was a four leaf clover. Fully colored and about the size of a quarter. It still looks like it did when it was new. 11 years ago.
