Keep in mind that these are some things that make a tattoo painful: Places over bone, over fleshy/fatty areas, genital, mucus membrane, over hair follicles(and because the hair grows through the tattoo when it heals), places with lots of nerve endings, thin skin, sensitive...etc
Places that you see veins very well, or with a lot of fat, or very thin skin will be painful.
One of the best ways to decide a good location for a tattoo(unlike the pain) is the career factor. Keep in mind that businesses and employers can and most likely will refuse you a job if they do no like tattoos. Especially if it is your first, think long and hard about the placement. (glad you have a design in mind! That's always a good start) Choosing a location that you can show, but just as easily hide is the most responsible choice. A not very painful, but easy to hide place is the shoulderblade. That is just an example. Think of places that you can make them as public or private as you want to, keep your career/future career in mind, and choose what YOU want, and you'll be fine.
The pain and discomfort that occurs during a tattoo varies from person to person and area to area. The sensitivity is relative to several factors, including the nerve structure in that area of the body (most painful places generally are the inside of the upper arm, the second knuckle, the center of the upper back, the outer sides of the lower back and kidney area, the ribs and obliques, and the clavicle area) and the amount of fatty or muscle tissue in that area. Some people find bony areas more painful, but it really depends on the sensitivity of the skin in that area.
Sometimes the pain is directly caused by the artist. Some artists are very heavy-handed, which causes a great deal of undue and unnecessary pain and discomfort, not to mention damage and trauma to the skin that can result in scarring and color that is too deep and will spread under the skin and look blurry in a few months or years.
If you plan to get another tattoo, I recommend looking for an artist who is light-handed. The way to find out about an artist's technique is to watch him or her tattoo on someone else and also look at their portfolio and check out their healed work to see if it is deep or blurry. As far as less sensitive places on the body, everyone is different, but generally speaking, the less sensitive the skin is, the less a tattoo should hurt. The ankle should not be particularly painful if you get away from the bone. Further up the leg on the calf is not bad, the thigh, the back of the shoulder, the upper arms on the outside, the wrist, the forearm away from the bend in the elbow, mainly places where you would not be ticklish. A tattoo should feel like scratching a sunburn or getting a cat scratch in the more sensitive areas. It should never feel like someone is cutting or rending your flesh.

I have 13 tats, i have them on my shin, ankles, wrist, forearms, legs , back shoulders, thighs, chest. To me the thigh was by far the worst pain I have EVER felt, aside from the nipple piercing I no longer wear. My shin, wrist, ankles were almost totally painless. The fleshier parts to me hurt the most. I seem to be the opposite of a lot of folks on yahoo answers.
I got one on my wrist this past Saturday, and I did not hurt much at all. About a 3 on a a scale of 1-10

Yes it hurts. If you get it on the inside of your upper arm, stomach, on a bone...hurt more than other spots. Its not unbearable or else no one would have them. As soon as the needle stops, the pain stops. They are very addicting. Make sure you do research on your tattoo because its for like and also think about the route your life will take versus where you want people to see them. good luck

Everywhere hurts its all just a different kind of pain!
I have one on my ankle, one on my stomach, on the back of my neck, and on my forearm and I'd have to say out of all those the one that hurt the most was the one on my ankle and the least one was the one on the back of my neck! Unbelieveable I know coz I always thought the one of my neck would hurt the most but it didnt!
Goodluck

it pretty much hurts everywhere as far as i'm concerned. i have a large tattoo on top of each of my feet and am working on a tattoo that covers my whole back. every minute of it has hurt to some degree. some places hurt more than others but that depends on location and pain tolerance.

Anywhere that there isnt a lot of meat. Bony places like the middle of your back, foot, and hip hurt the worst.

Anywhere your skin is thin or near nerves. You will have some pain no matter where you get it. Perhaps that's why most people get drunk before they get a tattoo.

All tattoos hurt to a certain extent. Reword the question and try again, no offense.
