just put a tile floor and shower in bath and have some chipping and separating grout should i pick it out or try to patch it?

you have to dig all the grout out about 1/4 inch deep or more then press new grout back in if you try to just brush off the crumbles and (patch) over it , the grout will not stick and crumble back off again. Once the crap spots are dug out you can fill them back in and when it dries add some sealer to the areas you patched.

After we tiled our kitchen and dining room, the grout chipped and cracked in a few places after a change of seasons and some settling occurred. I mixed up a small amount of grout in a small bucket and regrouted the affected areas and wiped them down again with a sponge, just as if we were grouting initially. Also, you can go over the floor with a grout sealer. This solved our problems, hope it works for you.

Cover it with Duct Tape, then put down tile.
