Very difficult to explain anything to persons who never had a thought, or just stopped thinking. Just tell them what's on your mind, then tell them to get the f--k away from you.

I am neither a Christian nor an atheist, but I wonder: is there a specific reason to do that? God's existence has neither been proved nor disproved so I don't see what's the problem to believe or not to believe in Him. As far as I know, simply believing in God is not the problem. Fanaticism is.
It is wise not to speak, other than on a personal level, as if you know that which you are talking about when in fact you don't. Respect what your fellow being believes, despite not sharing the same beliefs with him. "Have you faith? Then have it for yourself."

The best way to interact with someone is to not insult their beliefs.
If the person is a friend, the topic of religion, at least, should be mutually agreed to be off-limits. No conversation will produce conversion, on either side.

Know "their" faith better than "they" do. Start by knowing fundamentalists better than fundamentalists know themselves. Yes it is possible. I did it by being a fundie for a few years, but there are easier ways.
Also, know their holy books better than they do. I am Christian, but non-literalist and find it remarkably easy to put fundamentalists on the defensive. When they make an assertion and you simply attack the authority of the Bible and clearly show that it is full of errors -- they tend to freak out, and then either assert that it is right anyway, that it is spiritual truth (in which case why are they bothering to claim its laws matter?) or various other specious claims. Do not hesitate to counter as you see fit -- but to counter, you MUST know it well.
Nothing brings more fundies out of fundamentalism, btw, than actually knowing what the Bible says, the truth of its inaccuracy niggles away deep inside them, even while they are asserting and claiming that it is right anyway. The front doesn't stop the voice of reason deep inside that can't let go of the fact that someone has proved it to be full of errors. Years later such tactics bear fruit.
Hope that helped.

Reynolds Jones

What is the best way to calmly explain to an atheist that God DOES exist?
Leave christians alone. To each his own.

Just one more example of how atheists are way more into trying to convert us into their lives of non-belief than we are to them. I've never tried to convert anyone, but they just keep on going. I guess empty people want company, huh?
Which is worse, the rabid atheist or the rabid fundie? Use to think I knew, but these rabid atheists sure are giving the fundies a run for their money.

Whatever would convince you that your natural Father never existed....Christian's know God therefore hard to convince someone that what they know does not exist. Your problem is the same as a blind man who does not believe in sight convincing you that you also are blind and sight does not exist... The answer to question can be found if you decide to seek the truth.

You just did it.
Or do you feel the need to go forth and teach all nations? Do you really want to be an anti-Christian evangelistic zealot? You needn't bother -- the world is already full of them.

How WILL you "calmly explain" your position? This should be interesting......

You can try many ways but to borrow a phrase, pearls before swine.... (is it ok for an atheist to use that one?)
