I would suggest looking into a 1998-2003 Ford Escort ZX2. This is the 2 door coupe escort. I used to think these cars were a joke, but after my friend has owned 2 of them, I realize that they can take a lot of abuse with minimal problems, and when there is a problem it is much easier to work on yourself, compared to a lot fo the foreign competition. Basic repairs would be easier on this car than say a Honda Civic. The ZX2's also have a good amount of power while still getting excellent gas mileage. Some other good options would be the Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla, which are two of the most reliable cars ever built. They have a great mix of quality, reliabilty and gas mileage, but are not very sporty and are a little bit harder to work on. The ZX2 is sportier looking in my opinion, and handles very well.

the 1991-96 ford escort has a rediculously reliable engine. I've had one for several years without any problems.
