Both of these are movement of molecules through a cell membrane with the assistance of a protein carrier or transporter. In passive transport, the transporter will always move the substance from its higher concentration to its lower concentration. Sometimes, that will be into the cell, other times, it might be out of the cell.

In active transport, the transport protein uses a source of energy (ATP or something else) to always move the substance in a single direction. Because energy is used, things can be moved from lower to higher concentrations.

Active transport goes against the flow and takes energy. Passive goes with the flow and doesn't use energy.

active transport is the transport of substances with the aid of energy eg when plants take in minerals and passive transport is the transport of substance with the aid of the movement of particles rather than with energy
