Me and my girlfriend are looking after her parents puppy for a couple of weeks.

He is about 1 and a half years old and although he is intelligent he is very disobedient. Today he ran off in the park and we had to sprint after him.

I know the best thing to do is train dogs early on but his owners are very easy going with him and don't punish properly.

How can I train him to come back to me when called and do as he is told?

He's not leash trained, so just don't let him off the leash. It takes months of daily leash traing ( stop ! sit! Heel!) to make a dog understand what makes you happy... and believe me, he wants to please you. Once leash trained, the leash really isn't necessary. The dog will stay by your side willingly. As someone has already mentioned, the dog has had no training, so it's not your worry. But you don't want him to get hurt, so keep him on that leash... even if you are in a dog park. I'm glad you brought this up... a well behaved puppy takes consistent training, not punishment, to make a great life companion.

For heaven's sake, don't take him off leash!!! The other suggestions for teaching a dog to come when called are good, but it takes months of training (if not more) to get a dog to respond when off leash and around distractions. He's not your dog, so there isn't much point in working on this with him if his owners are not going to follow through. Keep the leash on, problem solved.

Well, what does he like? What's his favorite toy/food? When you go on a walk next time, wave it when you want him to come. Or grab his attention. Scold him in a high pitched tone if possible, make him know that YOU'RE the boss, NOT him.
