A number 4 is 1/2 inch cut all over. You should decide whether or not to go shorter depending on your hair's thickness. If your hair is fine or blonde you should go maybe a number 6 at the most. With fine or blonde hair the number 4 looks almost bald. If your hair is thick a number 3 may look like a number 4 on you. If your hair is in between thin and thick than a number 4 is the way to go. If you see a regular hairstylist you may also want to consider her opinion. The lower the number the shorter the hair, the higher the longer. Hope my advice helps you.

A Number 4 is usually a 1/2 inch guard! Its short but you wont look scalped (unless you have very fine hair or light hair)! I actually prefer a number 4 (1/2 inch) and number 3 (3/8) guard for buzz cuts! It looks clean! Guard sizes may vary depending on the manufacturer! I personally dont use number 6 guards because it tends to leave uneven results a number 6 is an inch guard and I can cut that with my hands, and then I cross check it to ensure an even result! If you want something between a number 4 and 6 go with a 5 its 3/4 inch!

That will be short, I personally use the # 5 on top and the # 4 for the sides and back, Then #3 around the neck line. The number 4 is no high and tight (Marine Corps, Semper Fi) but will be short

You should probably go for a #4 on top and a #3 on the sides, this helps the hair to grow out more even. With this cut, you can do many hairstyles with get/was/spritz whatever is to your liking.
