Having been a K-9 officer for the past seven years....I think I can help you. In most agencies, you'll have to become an officer first. Working with a sheriff's department, I came to "pushing" a K-9 because our agency didn't have the funds to hire another drug officer. The K-9 was offered as help in the interim.
First and foremost, however, you have to have the desire to dedicate yourself to the extra hours needed for training and upkeep of the K-9. Having a genuine care for the animal is certainly an advantage.
If you become hired by a law enforcement agency, you will go through a probation period. After completion of probation, voice your desire to become involved in the K-9 section. Most agency's use those who volunteer versus being "assigned" to the duty of K-9 officer.
Best Wishes!

Most agencies require you to be a law enforcement officer for at least 2 years. Hopefully the agency already has a K-9 program and you can apply. If not you have to design a program and sell the idea to your administration. K-9 programs can be very expensive.
Continuous training is a must so a K-9 officer must be adaptable with his schedule. Because you may be the only dog in your county you are called out at all times of the night. The overtime is great but if you have a family this can be tough
Being a K-9 Officer is a decision both you and your family should make together because it will change your life.
Good luck.

when you get on a department you have to let people know that you are interested in becoming a K-9 officer, but first you have to work most likely in patrol then maybe traffic, I am sure other officers on the department may have an interest in that also. You just have to keep trying. It took my 7 years to get into K-9. Good luck.

First you must hold a position as a sworn officer (I dont know anywhere in the us that will hire K9 officers from the outside)
Second You must apply to be in the K9 program
Third After being selected you go to train with the dog you are assigned
most K9 officers around here are active for 3-4 years before returning to a patrol position

In many departments you have to first be an officer for a while and then be able to apply for that position. Its "great", and your partner will never give away your secrets, be forever loyal, protect you without the slightest doubt, even if it costs its life, will never argue where to go for lunch, and will always back you up, and will keep his eyes and ears open and sometime his mouth for you.. Now for the K-9, it will have the best in food, medical and dental care, doggie supplies, will have an armed chauffeur, get bathed and groomed, given treats and chew toys from time to time (criminals), get play time at the park, and will do daily training, be part of the family, and his partner will also protect him to the utilimate.

regulation Enforcement is an extremely unique occupation. you're the two nevertheless very youthful. i could advise waiting till you're making it by your respective police academies and get employed by ability of a branch or company. Then, you (normally) ought to get some adventure (3 years is the smallest volume I even have seen) as a regulation enforcement officer formerly you're cautioned or allowed to grow to be a ok-9 officer. Then the dep. buys you an already experienced (and authorized) ok-9 and YOUR coaching as a handler starts. BTW, the canine are friendly and playful till 'on-accountability'. they could in all hazard get alongside properly.
