I worked in an elementary cafeteria for years...lunchables are the best way to go...the kids love them and they come in such varieties. They don't get tired of them and the lunchables contain everything needed for a well rounded lunch. I also worked in a convenience store where parents would come in right before school and pick up some for the kids' lunch that day. They don't have to carry a lunch box home, its all disposable.

Girl after my own heart just had a kids in the kitchen party so kids could pack their own lunches. We had tons of fun. Some of the things I send my kid are:
Pizza wrap: flour tortilla, pizza sauce topings of choice pepporoni, sausage chese roll up or fold over.
Ham roll up: lunch meat of choice cheese tortilla toppings rolled up ranch to dip in or dressing on.
Celery boats: Celery with peanutbutter in center and raisins on top for the people.
Kabobs: my sons favorites are summer sausage, colby cheese, ham cubed with cherry tomatoes or pickles. all on a scewer ready to eat.
Fruit kabob: rotate grapes, apples , pears, whatever fruit your kids like cubed up on a stick with yogurt to dip in.
Sandwiches cut into triangles are always more fun to eat.
Crackers are a nice treat with cheese and meats like pepperoni, solami, summer sausage or turkey or tuna.
My son likes hard boiled eggs also.
I use treats like cookies and chips and petezels alot but every once in a while I toss in a mini candy bar or a couple of twizzlers or a pudding cup.
To drink we do capri suns which can be frozen and used as great ice packs and thaw by lunch time or bottle water and sometimes I send flavor mix-ins for the water.
I surprise them with a lunchable sometimes and every now and then when I know they are having something he likes I send him money to have a warm lunch.
Have fun with it and let the kids help give you ideas and don't get upset if they come home saying they didn't like something you packed try something else next time.

You could make a chicken wrap with a tortilla, lettuce, grilled, baked or fried chicken, mayo, tomato, a little ranch sauce.

Maybe you could give them money to buy lunch once or twice a week, a sandwich once a week, a chicken wrap once a week, and a lunchable once a week. They key is to switch it up, so they don't get bored with the same old thing.

Lunchables, vegetable mixture cut up (carrots, celery, radishes, cucumbers). Deviate on the sandwiches - PB&J, Tuna, Ham/Cheese. Always include a fruit, some chips and also a cool treat.

The book "The complete Tightwad Gazette" has a lot of great ideas for school lunches and they are all really inexpensive. Plus, it's just a great book for anybody who has kids.

When i tire of doing sandwiches i usually offer pasta and hot dogs or Chicken satay sticks. Ill also buy them fruits in individual bags that you buy from tesco/asda. Or failing the above change your kids. (smile) Or I may ask my children to make up their own (sensible) lunches or change from bread to pitta.

One that gives them a lot of energy to WALK to & from the bus stop, because im sick of waiting behind busses between 2&4 o'clock because they have to stop every 100 ft.

*Wraps are great... lunchmeat, cheese, shredded lettuce, tomato... with a drizzle of ranch or mayo, in a flour tortilla. Roll it up and slice into little bite-sized "coins." (My son loves this!)

*Pitas have a nice built in pocket for any number of fillings.

*Cut up vegetables with dressing/dip.

*Celery sticks with cream cheese or peanut butter (YUM!)

*Tortilla chips with salsa/refried beans/cheese.

*Pasta salad and a roll.

*Cottage cheese with cinnamon/sugar or with a side of fruit.

*Crackers with cheese or hummus.

*Apple slices with peanut butter.

*Cheese cubes with grape tomatoes.
