It depends on how intrusive the clergy would be. If you mean just a system of law, and no abortion, no human cloning. Then I would take that. If it was a system where religious tolerance was abolished, and no say for the people then I dont know. I dont like either. Your comparing a liberal progressive society, that you probably feel is ideal. To a religous extreme society where the people have no say, and coruptable clergy run the system. I think this is the problem with unbelievers. They think that religous people want to force wild attitudes on them. The truth is I would be against killing babies and frankenstein cloning if I thought there was no god. I would still be conservative without god. Just like you, and many Christians, are liberal (at least you seem to be, but who knows). So this question really is not fair, and it doesnt really have to do with being christian.

I'm a Christian, and prefer not to live in a theocracy. Neither option sounds good to me, but I'd opt for the secular society in this hypothetical situation. There'd at least be a greater chance for basic human rights and liberties. The problem with a theocracy is that there are so many different types of religious belief, and for people not aligned with the ruling religion, life would become hell on earth. As much as I love my religion, I wouldn't want to live in a society that was tyrannically ruled by it.

Well, if a theocracy actually meant authentic dedicated Christians in goverment and more people truely giving their lives to Christ and recieving salvation, that would be the better of the two. But I suspect that it would actually mean more people hiding their true beliefs, a lot of "false" Christians trying to climb the theological ladder into goverment power, and a lot of people mis-using Christian beliefs for their own means--in which case I would prefer an secular society as long as Christians still were allowed to practice their religion there. (NOTE: You did say a "secular" society, not an "atheistic" society such as China, where religious activity is regulated).

Well, I would rather not live in either.
But, someday, we won't have a choice, because both will exist.
In the Tribulation period, we will be a secular society as you describe it, but there will also be a one world religion, which is supposedly a combination of all religions of the world in one big heap -- oh, except Jews and Christians.
Why not Jews and Christians? Well, because satan will be behind it all, and satan knows that God is the one true God and is a threat to his temporary reign.
But, I'm going up in the Rapture...so I will miss it all.
See ya!

First, let me set you strait on something. There is not a Christian in this Country who wants to turn America into a Theocracy, that is a lie. What we want is the contribution Christianity had in bringing about this Republic to be given its Historical place.
Now, I would not wish to live in either scenario !
The Atheistic Society of which you speak is called Communism !

In all honesty, I do not advocate a church-run society. There are good reasons for having the affairs of the church separate from government.
The problem is that some people and groups use separation of church and state as a basis for militant anti-Christianity.
There are also those Christians and groups that try to legislate morality.
Neither example is good.
I wish everyone could just respect each other's beliefs and their right to have them.

The perfect government is one in which God is King. This is infact the Kingdom of God as it exists... so it is a theocracy, with an incorruptable ruler who truly makes righteous and mercyful decisions on behalf of his subjects. God's wisdom exceeding beyond measure the wisdom of his creation. I long to live in this kind of government... where man's ignorance and inperfections are not a deciding factor of rulership... truths are aboslute, instead of democratic, political or relativistic.

I like my country and am fine with other religions existing, even if they are wrong. Where are those theocracies anyway? Not Iran. None of the countries in the Middle East or Africa. Are you talking about the Taliban?

I'd rather have religion and clergy ruling then no religion at all. In both cases, religious freedom is taken away, but I'd rather have a dictatorship built on religion then not be allowed to worship at all.
