Hi, I am looking at buying a Springer or Cocker Spaniel from either a breeder or a rescue dog.
Has anyone got any recommendations of Rescue places or Breeders in the Lancs / Merseyside / Cheshire area ???
Thanks

Thanks so far for the replies... I know they are so very different and I am favouring a Cocker at the moment but if a Springer Rescue dog turned up I would find it difficult to turn them away...

Hi - if you're looking to buy a puppy then you could try the Kennel Club website - it has lots of advice & holds a puppy register:
http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/item/436
Another website that has details of breeders (with locations) & details of puppies is the Champdogs site (think this one is used by breeders who also show their dogs). It also has lists of clubs.
(Not sure which type of Cocker or which type of Springer you're interested in - so I've put them all here)
Cocker Spaniels:
http://www.champdogs.co.uk/guided/all_cocker-spaniel.html
American Cocker Spaniels:
http://www.champdogs.co.uk/guided/all_american-cocker-spaniel.html
English Springer Spaniels:
http://www.champdogs.co.uk/guided/all_english-springer-spaniel.html
Welsh Springer Spaniels:
http://www.champdogs.co.uk/guided/all_welsh-springer-spaniel.html
Plus you could try the ePupz site - it has lists of breeders & puppies & dogs for sale from various sources. That is searchable both by breed & area. You have to join to get the contact details - it's free - however, if you want to follow up an ad that is less than five days old, you'll have to pay (about £5 I think).
http://www.epupz.co.uk/search/index.asp
This site gives lists of clubs to contact about rescue - I've only linked to the one page:
http://www.kennels.co.uk/Gundogs/Cocker%20Spaniel.htm
Cocker Spaniel Rescue:
http://www.thecockerspanielclub.co.uk/rescue.htm
Springer Spaniel Rescue:
http://www.englishspringerrescue.org.uk/index.php
Other contacts for rescue:
http://www.dogpages.org.uk/breeds2.htm
Hope the links help - best wishes

A 8 weeks old the only way to tell the difference between a Cocker Spaniel and a Springer Spaniel is the coat pattern. Like Clover already said, Springer Spaniels are never all one color. They're always black and white OR brown and white. Cocker Spaniels, Field Spaniels, and Sussex Spaniels are the only Spaniel breeds that can ever come in solid brown. As the dog gets older the differences will become all the more apparent. Springers are bigger, heavier, more active. Cocker Spaniels (I'm assuming you mean English Cocker) will practically resemble a smaller, more compact Springer with a milder temperament and with just slightly less of a need to run around all day. Both are extremely intelligent and require frequent grooming. Springers and Cockers Spaniels have been separate breeds for many many years and it should be easy to distinguish between two adult specimens. Like Clover already wrote, you don't just suddenly get a Springer Spaniel dog form a litter of Cocker Spaniels. A few hundred years ago that was possible, but that was when the breeds were still in development. They are established and completely separate breeds now.

The Cocker Spaniel Club is the Parent Club of the breed and was founded in 1902 with a membership of 35. Today, there are over 1500 members (both home & overseas). The Club holds an annual Championship Show at Malvern in July as well as the now well- established Puppy Match held in January (for those puppies who have won a Puppy Class at Championship Shows throughout the year). From 2004, the Match will also include a Veteran competition (for those Cockers who have won a Veteran class at a Championship Show). There is in addition an annual points competition to find Cocker Of The Year and Cocker Puppy Of The Year, much sought after titles. Educational seminars are also organised from time to time. The Club co-ordinates a Rescue Scheme for those Cockers needing to be rehomed and also monitors hereditary problems in the breed, with an an eye-testing session held at each Championship Show and the publication of an annual Welfare Report (detailing dogs that have been eye-tested and/or hipscored and listing those dogs that have been found to be affected with PRA or have produced a confirmed case of FN) All members receive a copy of the annual Year Book, a highly collectible publication detailing the Club's activities for the past year together with photos of members' Cockers. The Club also has a flourishing Field Trial Section which organises two annual Field Trial events.

Don't know any breeders, but get a cocker. They're the best! Try doing an online search.
