I recently attended a workshop by a guy that was a producer on Oprah's show in addition to having worked on several other major television shows. He gave us tips on how to get the attention of the producers of TV or radio shows to get booked for interviews, etc. and a couple of the main things he mentioned that are required to stand out from the crowd of others vying for free air time are:

Make sure you have a "hook" - in your approach to the radio or TV show, make your message intriguing - is there a unique way to package your friend's story that makes it seem more appealing or gains and holds a potential viewer/listener's interest more than a merely fact-based statement. You have to appeal to the emotional side of the audience and pique their interest with a statement and message that breaks through the white noise of all the messages we automatically ignore. For example "...and, after the break...our next guest teaches us how we can say goodbye to joint pain forever" (obviously, you'd put more than three seconds of thought into crafting something truly intriguing! :-)

Second, you need to make sure the materials you're using to promote yourself to get on TV or onto the radio are professionally-presented. If you're pitching by email, be sure there are no spelling or grammatical errors in your message. Attach a bio of the person or a specially-designed promotional piece - preferably crafted by an experienced graphic designer who can really create something that stands out. In general, if you're marketing yourself, you want to speak in terms of benefits for the target audience, not features of the service, product, etc. IE: For a car, a feature might be 4-wheel drive. The benefit associated with that feature might be added stability or power. So, write down the features of your service and then figure out what the benefits are and craft your message around those. You always need to answer the question "what's in it for the customer? how will their life be better as a result of using this product/service"?

Also, be sure to follow up. Don't become a pest, but if you send your intro/pitch to the station by email or mail, take the time to call and follow up. Don't make them do the work because they won't! Make their life as easy as possible and let them know why THEY and their audience will benefit from having your friend on their show. It's obvious that your friend will benefit from the increased credibility she'll receive by being invited to appear on a show, so you have to show the radio station what's in it for them. Why pick your friend over the tons of other people who may also be trying to go on the air?

Contrary to what you may hear from other resources, it's my firm belief that if you get a voice mail when you call, LEAVE A MESSAGE. This is a good introduction to your personality and voice and the person will be more likely to know who you are if you leave a message.

Good luck!

you're already doing the main suitable risk to be heard. get rid of your opposition. Take them off the air like the Soviet Union did. this is a initiate. yet no person will pay attention to you. Your human beings will continuously pay attention to rap, Jerry Jerry, Oprah, the cleansing soap opera's and all of the rubbish the main important flow information media shoves down your throat. in the event that they are able to get rid of the liberty of concept coming from talk radio, then they are able to regulate the type you think of. i'm getting your element woman. returned for the libs, Jerry Jerry. you obtain you human beings, go away us on my own.

She has to offer something unique/distinct from others who have the same experience, skills, education. Perhaps she applies her craft while telling jokes.
