There are two kinds actually, laser, and spectrum.

The laser sights actually put out a laser guide like you see in military use and swat use, the good ones start at about 200+ at about 100yards. And yes i have 3 for 3 differant appilications and i love them.

The spectrum sights are actually a red dye dot in the scope creating of a spectrum, although they do not put the dot on the target, it makes it much easier to be accurate over trying to line up the sites. I never used one ona hand gun before, i prefer the laser sights for that, but i did have one on my 22 which worked decently. They start at about 50+ depending on the brand and application.

I have several firearms with red dot rectal sights. The are great for shooting fast and shooting at multiple targets. However they are not the best for precise shot placement. About the smallest "dot" I've seen are called 3" dots, meaning they will cover a 3" circle at 100 yards. Most are larger going all the way up to a 10" dot. The smaller ones are tiny and difficult to pick up. In competition I prefer about a 6" dot.

This doesn't mean you can't use them for hunting. But in most instances a low powered scope, like a 2X will allow for much more precise shot placement needed when hunting large game with a handgun. Remember that a .44 magnum is still far less powerful than say a .30-30. Bullet construction and shot placement are essential.

Good luck.

I have a red dot on one of my pistols. It's easier to use than iron sights since there's nothing to line up, just put the dot on the target and shoot. One thing I don't like is the dot is 4MOA. Minute of angle is just slightly over an inch at 100 yards so the dot covers 4 inches at 100 yards so it's not like cross hairs where you can be precise. In most states it's illegal to use a laser for hunting so check your regulations before you spend the money and find out you can't use it.

The dot reticle 1x scopes are paralax free and offer quicker target aquisition than fixed sights in low light conditions. You will want to get a quality scope for the 44 magnum, one that will handle the punishment of the hot loads.

Depends on what you consider a "Red Dot Sight"?
A real red dot site is a scope with a red dot instead of crosshairs inside.
Some people call laser sights "red dot" too, although the dot is red, it's really a laser.
Red Dot sights are pretty nice to use if you need a scope, but for handgun hunting or close-in defense, they are a little slow to aquire your target.
A laser sight, slung below the barrel of your 44mag, makes for quick aquisition of your target and supreme accuracy!
I have one on a 357mag and on a Ruger P-89. There is a pressure switch that attatches to your grip with velcro so when you grab the grip the laser turns on. I keep mine sighted at 30 yards dead-on. For longer ranges, just aim slightly above your desired target. especially with a nine mils lower velocity.
You will have to purchase a custom holster to carry the gun with the site installed.

Good luck!

Cheap red dots are poor quality, so by the time you get a good one you may as well have gotten a nice LER optical scope for the wheelgun for taking deer.

I'm sure some people do hunt with them, but I feel that they are more for the urban 'tactical' rifle, i.e. the toys.

For getting off quick shots this is the way to go I have one on a 22 Remington auto and one on a shot gun which I use rabbit hunting. These are the cheapies that Simmons puts out $40.00
range.Or you can spend more money and get a Laser Sight approx $100.00 on up.
