My 8 year old son chews on things like that. But, he has Asperger's Syndrome. So, his is a sensory thing. I was told get something he didn't like to taste and put it on the things he chewed on. But, ask his doc about it. He also could be missing something in his diet.

Usually infants have this behavior, because the tongue is highly sensitive, like the fingers. So they feel things with their tongues instead of hands.

Of course your 11 year old isn't an infants, it could be a phase like thumb-sucking. I think that discipline may be the only way to stop this behavior.

It's possibly an oral sensory thing, I used to have it when I was little, but Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy have taken care of that

Maybe he's nervous about something. When I was younger and nervous about things I'd chew on pens.
