I want my jack russell terrier to learn to fetch my shoes or get the newspaper for me. He usually will take a pair of shoes and chew on them but I want him to bring them too me on command. Please help.

I taught my dog to get the newspaper by saying "get the newspaper" repeatedly and running out the door with her, pointing at the newspaper until she picked it up, and running back into the house and giving her a treat. We did it about six times the first day, and once or twice the next day. She had it by the third day.
The problem came about six months later when we did not get a newspaper that day. She looked around, and took the nearest paper -- from two houses down.

i hope that first you have taken him to obendence school so he nows basic comamds.
now the second training will be easier to have he learn to bring back the shoes. you get he to pick them up a few feet away from you and tell him to come. if he does not bring them with him repeat and give him a treat when he comes on comamd bringing the shoes.
repeat once or twice more give small treats then wait till tomorrow. this time be father away.
the next thing is to teach him to fetch anything.

terriers are INSANE,they will only do what they want to do,when they want to do it!!! :-) I have two, around 10 dog years ,and they drive me crazy,finding new ways to destroy the house,and don't get me started with the barkingggggggggggggggggg
