I have never flown overseas so I have never had one, now that you need one to fly into the states I think I should get one soon just in case, also how much do they cost and how often do you need to renew them? Do children need passports?

The fee is $87 and the passport lasts 5 years.

The normal process time is 10 working days if applying in person at a Passport Office, 20 working days if by mail, but right now they report delays of 5 to 20 working days.

It doesn't hurt to pick up an application the next time you are near any postal outlet.

I just got back from the US, and unfortunate that my passport just expired as it is the busiest time to renew. But I am thinking like you, I want to renew it now, just in case.

It usually takes 10 working days, but due to the current rush it's upwards of 15-20 working days now. This is assuming you go to the passport office in person, if you do it by mail it can take up to 2 months - one of my co-workers sent her's by mail about 6 weeks ago and is still waiting.

Right now due to the rush, it take approx 30-40 days to process, this of course will ease off after the crunch. As for children, yes, they now need passports as well to enter the U.S.

10 days if you go right to the passport office,
20 days if you apply on line
and maybe more for a couple of months due to the demand right now for passports because we need them for the US, Mexico, and the Caribean

It takes about 6-8 weeks to get a passport, but you can pay to have it done faster (especially with evidence of travel plants). I believe children under 12 only need proof of citizenship/residence.
