Patient rights. If cultural food isn't going to cause more harm or clash with the plan of care for a patient then all caregivers should respect wishes. Hospital food often does suck... and if you're vegetarian or have special dietary needs because of your "dosha" (Hindu ayurveda), or "Nyepa" (Tibetan ayurveda), etc. you're not likely to have your needs met by the common hospital dietary program.

Because the patient does not like the hospital food.

Because the patient like home cooking.

Because the family is trying to make the patient's hospital stay as comfortable as possible.

Because they love the patient.

Many hospitals in certain countries do not provide food for their patients, it falls to the responsibility of the family. Or perhaps they have particular religious or cultural customs they follow. Or maybe they're just doing the next best thing for homesickness.

B/C hospital meals are really bland. Asian food is flavourful and spicy. It is likely that the patient is having cravings.

My psychotic powers tell me that you are a doctor and suspect deliberate poisoning. Have you checked for thallium poisoning yet? Just throwing ideas out there.

And no, there would be no religious reason for bringing food, although it may be as simple as the fact that hospital food sucks and the family knows this.

same reason any other nationality would ask. they want their family member to have his or her favorite food while in the hospital...and hospital food usually sucks!

because maybe they believe in healing herbs ect....not to mention their food probably is healthier and tastes better then hospital food :)

Sure why not. it is what they are used to eating. Its bad enough they are sick, may as well eat comfort food from home.

Maybe they're hindu or buddist, on strict fresh veggies and fruit diets.
