In a direct system the water is drawn straight from the mains.
In an indirect system the water comes from a tank which is fed from the mains, usually controlled by a ball valve,
i.e. your hot water cylinder is fed from a tank whereas your shower is usually fed direct from the mains.

A direct cold water supply is exactly what it means. The cold water coming out of your tap is coming straight from the mains water. The water has not come from a storage cistern in the house.

The indirect system refers to when you have a cold water storage cistern in the house (usually in the loft). The mains water fills this by means of a ball valve. The water contained in the cistern is then sent down pipes to your taps.

The indirect system is useful in areas where mains water pressure is a problem. Most new installations will have a direct system, as it provides the consumer with potable water at every tap in the house.
