Before I had my son I was not allergic, and now I am. I was also away from home for a long time. My mom got a new cat but it was not working out so she gave him to me and now I feel like a leaky faucet, and I haven't even been touching the poor cute little thing. I don't want to have to give him up. Is there something I can do, or will my allergies eventually adapt? Thanks!

yes they will. At one point my best friend couldnt be in my house for more than 5 min. ( not joking) however over the years she has grown immune to my cat, still has reactions to other cats but not mine.

This is going to sound weird but I had college roomates that were highly allergic to cats and ........I had 2. We shared a house so they put me on the bottom floor but you know.......sometimes the cats get out. If the gray and white one got upstairs, they would all be sneezing and wheezing and puffy eyes, but once the Orange one ran up there and........nothing. They couldn't believe it. They started sleeping w/ her at night, they were so happy to be able to be around a cat.
I don't know what the difference is but....maybe you need an orange cat.

You could talk to y our pharmacist or your doctor and see what they would recommend. I think that allergies to animals can be managed and sometimes the person can adapt or at least have a decrease in their symptoms. As long as you aren't having rashes or hives from the allergy I think you will be able to manage it. Good luck.

no, they'll never go away, the only thing you can do about it is just deal with it or take medicine. i wish it worked that way, i love cats and got a kitten recently, only to find out my girlfriend is TERRIBLY allergic to cats, it causes asthma attacks and hard coughing to the point of vomiting. i had to give the cat back and felt horrible about it, it was such a cute little kitten!

my neighbor actually got shots that built up immunity (or something like that) so that he could live around the cat w/out the leaky faucet syndrom :-) Check w/your doctor to see if that is an option for you.
