If you're a high protein, low carb believer... yes they are fattening.

If you're a calorie counter, as long as it's part of a balanced diet. No.

I believe in moderation and balanced diet.... so my answer is NO.

Bagels are mostly a problem due to their size. Most bagels count as 2,3, or even 4 servings of grain products. That's a LOT (especially considering most people only need 6-8 servings a day). That leads to overindulgence.

Best to stick to whole grain bagels without the cream cheese. And try only eating 1/2 a bagel at a time...

if you must have the bagel eat it plain. but slowly try to find a better alternative. bagels are not a sustainable weight loss food. eating bagels will eventually put you at a weight loss plateau.

300 calories of simple carbohydrate... which will give your body a jolt and then let it down about two hours later... which means you are hungry again. It's better to put a different kind of 300 calories to work for you... combo of protein and fiber will go the distance. Just make certain your protein isn't swimming in grease.

they sure are if you don't exercise or balance it appropriately with some fat and protein. bagels are very high in carbohydrates which will cause your blood sugar to spike. when your blood sugar spikes, insulin is secreted from the pancreas. if you're not using your bagel meal for immediate energy, then insulin will carry the excess sugar and store it in fat. enjoy!
