My cat uses the litter box, yet she never covers her mess up with the litter. She has enough clean litter in her box to cover her mess but I can't understand why she won't do it. I didn't potty train her because I got her when she was already full grown, so I don't know if there was a glich in her training or what? Please help me:)

I have the same problem with my calico. I asked the vet I worked for and he said that some cats never do cover their poop and she will probably always do it. It tried the taking her paws and making her cover it and all that got me was a big mess because she would start kicking and flinging poop everywhere so I wouldnt recommend that. She actually scratches and everything but she does it before she goes to the bathroom instead of after. When we first got her, my male cat hated it so much he would go behind her and cover it as to say this is what you should do but he finally gave up along with the rest of us. The cover on the box helps a little but if it bothers you when you notice it just take the scoop and flip some litter on it yourself because I doubt your cat will change. well good luck with her but I think you are like me and we have the stubborn cats who wont cover their poop.

Cats aren't really trained to use a litter box. It is shown where it is and from the first time on that is where they do their business. Change the litter to another kind. Maybe she doesn't like the location and does her business and gets out of there. Who knows why she has chosen this habit. Be glad that she does use it or that would present a whole new problem.

I cant really say but if you are really having a hard time with the smell then you can get a cover for your litter box....they sell them at walmart, kmart, farmer co-ops, and pet stores. I had one and they are great. Cuts down on smell and keeps litter from flying everywhere. Maybe try showing the cat with a litter scoop how to cover it up. Good luck!

Some cats are just plain old finicky and it may be hard to change her ways however you can actually show her a few times. If she watched other cats that would teach her . I would guess that she's an indoor cat and has never seen another cat going to the kitty bathroom!
I really think that she doesn't know better and needs to watch another cat. Let her look out the window but also try to show her that her personal business needs to be covered. Good Luck!

That's actually pretty normal. If she's grown, she probably isn't going to change her habits at this point!
I strongly recommend you get a covered box - that way you don't have to see it. Maybe try different litter? My favorites (and I've owned cats my whole life) are "Yesterday's News" and "Feline Pine". They are more pellet- like and they seem to cover up smells better. The covered box is key, though. Good luck!

This worked well for me. Take her to kitty box, hopefully just after she has relieved herself. Gently put her in the box, take her paw and cover the mess with the kitty litter.

Try this a few times. worked for me when I was a child, and whenever I had a kitty that needed help with this.

Or, she may not like the kitty litter - always possible.

I have both in my house. Covered: Pros : Traps the smell a little better Con: Makes it harder for bigger cats to use the whole litter box, harder to clean Uncovered: Pros: Easier to clean, cats can use the whole litter box, can attach automatic scoopers Cons: Can smell worse, My personal opinion, not much of a list haha. Prefer uncovered could u tell(:

ive given up on my poor dopey cat ever getting the hang of it now, well, she is 17 years old, and when the weather gets too cold for her to venture outside, she will reluctantly use her litter tray, and then look extremely confused as she scratches away at the old newspapers spread underneath it and wonder why she isnt covering anything up!
roll on summer!

no glich, she's in charge, the dominant cat in an area doesn't cover it's mess. It's her way of asserting that it's her territory. I'm not sure how you prevent that.
