If its like a 35MM roll, then if the beginning piece of film isnt showing, then its used.

Actually. many cameras leave a bit of leader sticking out after rewinding. I always tell my lab customers to manually roll this back into the film canister so it's no longer visible.

A brand new 35mm roll has the leader sticking out to the 4th sprocket hole on the short side. But nothing is certain. I would develop it rather than take a chance, unless I was certain my camera always rewound the whole thing.

If there's a little bit of film sticking out, then it's most likely a new roll.

When you rewind the film after exposing it, the act of rewinding usually sucks that end all the way into the canister. So if you don't see a small bit of film sticking out, then it's probably a used roll.

These aren't guarantees but it's a pretty safe bet.
