I've heard that if you want to do any kind of semi professional / amateur film making and editing - DV tape is the way to go. is it true that camcorders which record to a mini DVD dont allow the footage to be loaded onto a computer for editing?

Definately go with Mini DV, it is way better for editing. There are tons of programs that support Mini DV. You CAN edit mini DVDs, but not as many programs support it (Mpeg2). Mini DV is overall a much more flexible formate.

If you decide to go with DVDs, you can use programs such as "Adobe Elements". Go to www.camcorderinfo.com and search for the cam your looking for. Its a great site and should clear things up for you.

Dude DV is the only way to go, theres not a choice here. MiniDVD is for the lazy video-tards who dont know how to edit (which I'm guessing you probably know how to do). In filmmaking, there are really just two formats: film and DV. Yes, this is the year of HD (or so I've heard), and HDV is a good format, but dont go for it yet, unless you've got a kickass computer and kickass software to go along with the kickass computer. You could also shoot on film, and its actually not as crazy as it sounds because there are people I know who shot their first film on film. But its not for everyone. If you do shoot on film, super-8's probably the way to go. (well, pretty much the only way to go, unless your father owns a bank). You can pick up a super-8 camera for around $20, but the film will cost you a lot more. Anyways hope this helps, and if you ever want to talk about filmmaking, just give me shout out at thelordoftheringsfan@gmail.com

Just look at what the TV news folks use. They use tape of some form or another - either MiniDV, DVCAM, etc. No one in their right mind would use DVD, hard drive, etc. Its just too clumsy to use - opening and closing files, etc.

We think in terms of tape, so we use tape.
