It’s all right to conform to a person’s wishes, if it ultimately benefits you. But only fools follow along with the herd, letting an impersonal entity dictate to you. The key is surely to choose a master wisely instead of being enslaved by the whims of the many.

What about the herd mentality of those who believe Darwinian evolution to be fact, just because they are constantly told it is? If they were willing to think for themselves they would not believe everything they are told by people who undoubtedly have a philosophical, vested interest, rather than a purely scientific one. The evolution myth has only suceeded in fooling so many people, for so many years, because of this unquestioning herd mentality, evolutionists rely on it, more so than any other creed.
So Evolutionists and Atheists should not knock this sheeplike tendency, they have found it very useful, and every time they issue a sound bite or slogan according to their tried and tested method that decrees that they only have to say something to make it so, they should thank their lucky stars that such a herd conformity exists.

Dear Jazman, I can name one due to personal experience. My mother became a JW before I was born but I'm so grateful that my dad brought my siblings and I up in a Christian church. When Mom was pregnant with her 6th child the doctor put her in the hospital for a couple of weeks to keep her off her feet, 2 months before she was due. She had a lot of trouble with varicose veins. On the day Mom was supposed to come home from the hospital we had the worse snow storm in decades. Mom was hemorrhaging and if she had been at home she would not have lived. After the hospital called Dad his drive to the hospital took him 45 minutes rather than the usual 5. Mom's doctor couldn't get to the hospital so a doctor who lived nearby walked over to do an emergency C-section. Dad called his friend from high school (a judge) to get a court order allowing the doctor to give Mom blood because she had lost a tremendous amount. No JWs were at the hospital to stand with Mom against Dad or the transfusion.and Mom lived as did my brother. Edit: They both would have died without the blood transfusion. Mom has never forgiven Dad for what he did to her and she decided to forgo her "place in heaven". She looks forward to sitting in judgment against Dad in "restored paradise earth". In addition to this I know there is a group that will not taken any medicine. Since I have Type 1 Diabetes it makes me furious when I hear about parents who will not allow their children to be given insulin when they develop Diabetes. I do not know the numbers who have died but even one needless death is one too many. For His glory, JOYfilled - Romans 8:28

God is a wonderful power available to ALL. It was never meant to be organized. There are many different types of herd mentality. How about things like AMWAY.How about being IRISH. or maybe GAY. or PRETTY. anytime a group excludes others they are a religion. I think all religions require three things and if any of these three are present run, don't walk away.
1) This is the only way. (or best way)
2)Since this is the best way and you are already smart/advanced enough to know this, you've got to try and raise the groundings up to your level.
3) We need money!
There's a joke about the devil coming across all the info on the power of God, and she says."hey, let me organize that for you"(abbr version)

Organized religion has had several forms....and taken many shapes.....it first appeaded in early humans as a way to keep hope....be that for a secussful hunt of a good crop.....during the early middle ages it was social control...the pope was the most powerful man in the world....kings would do "what the church wanted" like the crusades for example....also cults work on this principle...its a control thing for the leaders. Today it has gotten back to what it was suppose to be......people who choose can attend and worship together....you can't be punished for not going.....its a choice now.....which is a good thing.....that is what god is about....we have the choice to beleive or not and govern ourselves.....

Would you prefer disorganised religion.
Would you say the same about sport, business, etc?
If the 'herd' as you call it (a rather judgemental term by the way) happens to be going the right way, why is it foolish to go with it?
I believe that God is a Personal being....How do you follow something impersonal?

Do you like sports, hobbies, educational pursuits, or anything else that is often done with a class, group, club or team? If so, then don't be so quick to condemn the concept of "herd conformity". Doing things in a group does not necessarily mean blind conformity (just ask any football player). If one is religious, then it can be nice at times to find people who share a similar interest. Hence, organized religion. As for the "impersonal entity", I disagree, but don't wish to get into an entire belief vs. disbelief debate. I live in an area where my religious belief is in the minority. I hear people bash my religion literally every day, so it's nice to be able to attend church at times with people who are not antagonistic to my faith, but are supportive of it.

I always thought it was. How can it be that EVERYONE in a church beleives EVERYTHING the preacher is preaching? As I grew up in a church family I accepted what was being taught. As I got older and wiser I started to notice that things weren't as I had always thought. As I became an adult I realized it was all a con. Well, that changed my life completely. I am not sure if I will ever belong to a church again. Churches are for people that need other people( that don't necessarily know what they're talking about) tell them how to live their lives.Churches (groups)can be VERY hypocritical and always have been.

Religion can be a beautiful thing, it's organized religion you need to watch out for. When they start demanding vows of obdience and issuing commandments, then it is time to start herding. Some of the Jesus freaks on Yahoo answers give answers that sound hypnotized and enslaved. It can be scary to listen to.

Well, let me say this. The human mind is such that people need to feel that they "belong" to a group - any group - to feel "validated."

Look around you.

There are special interest groups of every kind; deer hunters, duck hunters, nudists, KKK, Nazis, bikers, etc.

They come together to feel a sense of community, and share their particular kind of joy with one another.

Now, the thing that sets religious groups apart from the rest, is that they feel the need (or some do) to proselytize others ("become one of us" "join the collective"). That wouldn't be so bad if some didn't make it THEIR business to get into YOUR business.

They're all just looking for others "like them" so they can play their little reindeer games. For the most part, its harmless. It's only when they get in bed with politicians that it gets scary.
