Here are troubleshooting options:
1. Check the feed trays; open and close each to make sure they close securely.
2. Check for power to the fax; if no lights or sound, then move fax to another power outlet and try again. If still no lights or sound, the fax has a problem. Possibly fuse, transformer or power cord faulted.
3. Check for dial tone. If no dial tone, plug a telephone in the wall jack and verify operation. If the telephone gets a dial tone, then fax has a problem. If telephone does not get a dial tone, then the wall jack or its line in has a problem.
4. Check phone cord. Unplug it from fax and plug into a telephone. If the telephone works, the fax has a problem. If the telephone does not work, the cord is faulty. Just swap the fax phone cord with another telephone cord.
5. If there is a computer in the home, try swapping the filter on the phone line. Remember, the line feeding the computer modem must _not_ be filtered, while the household telephones and fax machines must be filtered.

Have you read the owners manual to set it up. Do you have a telephone line connected to it and is it working. If so then you should have no problems sending and receiving faxes. Just place the document where it is supposed to be and press the number of the place you are trying to fax it to and press start. Your fax should then go.

And what have you tried so far?
Are you getting phone signal? (Pick up the handset and listen)
Is the printing working? Can you print reports or such from it or do built-in print test?
Does the built-in copy function work? (Which would prove scanner works)
If it's a new fax machine it would have a manual. Did you go through the troubleshooting section?
