I'm originally from right near Kensington. It's pretty nice there... but mostly single-family homes (not that you can't rent there, and actually single family homes are probably more likely to allow pets than apt. buildings). There are stores and stuff there, plus it's close to other areas that have even more stores and restaurants. There's no Metro (subway) station IN Kensington but there are some that are pretty close.

Wheaton is OK - it's definitely not as upscale (Not that Kensington is super-upscale). But there are some areas in Wheaton that are a little shady at night. There is not a lot of violent crime (like no random murders) but probably some break-ins, etc. However, there are a lot of pretty good ethnic restaurants in Wheaton - as someone said, lots of Asians and Hispanics. Plus Wheaton Plaza (aka Westfield Mall) is there, with lots of good shopping. And there's a Metro stop in Wheaton as well.

It is not the best areas of the county, and it is very diverse. Wheaton has many Asians and Hispanics. The home prices/rentals vary greatly. There is Westfield mall in Wheaton which is a big shopping area. Kensington is more of a bedroom community with older homes. If I had to choose I would choose Kensington.

The Wheaton Metro Station has the longest escalator in the Western Hemisphere.

either area is ok. but you have to remember..convenience comes at a high price in the Metro DC area.

you will find a diverse community everywhere inside and outside the beltway.

norhtern Virginia is much nicer :)
