as a long time EMT i get asked that a lot. first of all have a plan. most panic comes from not knowing what to do. learn basic first aid, practice EDITH drills at home, learn how to use a fire extinguisher, notice where the exits are, think about how you would handle an accident scene before guys like me get there. is short prepare yourself to handle crisis before it come to you. when confronted by one look over the scene and find something you can do. maybe its call 911, maybe traffic control, maybe care for children that need it, maybe just keep an injured person confortable. a warning however- don't try to be a hero. without training and equipt you may become another victim. help where you can but do so safely

1.Concentrate on the solution of the crisis, remember the solution is the only way your crisis will end.

2, Revise your current standing in the crisis: what is the worse that could happen? once you know the answer, it will inspire you towards the solution.

3. Find ways to keep your mind off the crisis: play a game, waste time on anything that interests you.

4. Remind yourself how well off you will be once this crisis is over.

5. Do not listen to what others think of the crisis, you are in the crisis, not them.

Put it in the freezer.

Ok, serious....Knowing you have the knowledge, common sense and ability to adapt, overcome and conquer.

Think back at past crises. Did you overcome it? Are you still breathing? You're doing well now? Then obviously, it's just another obstacles in the path of life. Crises are a part of life and to worry about them is a waste of time. Concentrate on the solution, have the ability to apply that solution, then solve it. It's just another learning experience of life.

It is probably part of my training as an RN. I am just natuarlly in charge when there is an emergency...with my family or others. You take a deep breath...maybe several, and go to it! I have worked the ER and as a flight nurse for Air Amb...I just have to keep it together.
