This is a great question. I have to say I started living a much healthier life once I completely abandoned religion.

Because the "afterlife" is a life in an eternal place of perfect paradise with Jesus Christ our Lord, while this world is corrupted by Satan and his demons! As for your "life that we ABSOLUTELY know" quote, true Christians like me believe what Jesus says in John 20:29-"Blessed are those who have NOT seen and YET have believed."

No, the afterlife is our destination. But how we live our lives here is very important. If it wasn't, why would God continue to keep us here and not just supernaturally transport us to heaven the moment we make the choice to accept Jesus?
The importance of life is to grow and learn so that we are worthy to be in His presence in the afterlife.
Living here, builds character and faith, teaches us love and forgiveness. Good qualities that reflect God's good qualities and His righteousness.

The definition of atheist is individual who does not believe in god. some atheists do believe in an afterlife. there is a lot evidence for an afterlife, this is declared as death. We observe that death follows on the instant after existence.

Because this life is only temporary, 8 decades. If we have accepted Christ's gift of eternal life, then that is what we will have - eternal life. So that is the one we should be concentrating on. To believe that this sinful, miserable, short existence is all that we have, is sad indeed. We were created for eternal life, but we are currently living in fallen bodies.

Who knows? Look at the terrible things some beleivers think are pleasing to God. Example: Those so-called Christians who demonstrate at the funerals of dead soldiers because " God hates fags." HUH?
Ever see Shirley Phelps Roper, trying to defend those idiots? Her eyes are dead, and she smiles this creepy phony smile the whole time. . And every sentence starts with "The Lord Your God." She must be a robot.

The afterlife is forever, this life is so very short. We need to learn while we are here so we can move on peacefully and happily.

Please read my words carefully:
If you see footmark in the sand, you'll say that someone passed from here...
If you see a piece of dog sh*t on the ground, you'll say that a dog passed from here...
So what about the enormous universe, the sky, stars, planets, earth and all the beauty in it, doesn't it lead to that someone made it?!!!
Some people say that everything is created by itself after the big-bang... I won't ask you about what caused the big-bang, but I'll ask you a simple question:
If you take all the letters of the alphabet, multiples of them, and you threw them randomly on the floor. Do you expect (by a chance of one in infinity) to get a poem like shakespear's??!!
Can't you see how organized our universe is, the planets, the eco-system on earth, look even in your own body... Can you control your heart-beat? Can you control your breath while you're sleeping? Who stopped your eye-lashes from growing after reaching a certain length? Who told the baby turtles to move towards the sea and not to the earth after they come out of their eggs? Who taught the bird how to make nests?
My friend, think with your heart and brain. If you're still lost, think about the following:
Do you know how to play safe?
Non-believers' point:
If there's no God and you do all what you want in life, then nothing will happen to you after life. But if there was God and you were mistaken, then you'll blame yourself FOREVER...
Believer's point:
If there's God and I followed His commands in life, then I'll be in Heaven after life FOREVER. But if there was no God and we're mistaken, then nothing bad will happen to us after life...
Now you know how to play-safe, in case you're not convinced?

This life is what you remember right now, but that does not mean that it's the only thing. We are spirits having a human experience, not humans having some spiritual experiences.
