I don't make her take a nap on the weekends but sometimes she gets tired from playing as she's a very active little girl. She still sleeps about 9 or 10 hours at night and will mostly just take an hour nap. I don't see a problem with this, so why do some of my friends with children look at me in horror when I say she still naps?

Thanks for all the answers so far! Yes, she does feel more refreshed after a nap and so do I because often I take a nap the same time she does. Most of the time she's just a happy, active child but I can tell when she needs a rest because she gets cranky and whiny.

It's completely normal for a 5 year old to nap! Heck, even we as adults takes naps as often as time allows! Why wouldn't she, with her growing body want/need a nap?

Your friends are probably depriving their children of napping. There are some really informative books out there about the importance of napping and sleep.

There is no problem at all. That's completely normal. I took naps when I got home from Kindergarten for an hr. or so when I was 6. Also, my sister-in-law hasn't made her son nap since he was 3. He is now 5 and once in a great while he takes a nap and it's amazing at what a different child he is. He is usually unruley and doesn't listen and mainly a brat. (not sure if this is your situation or not...) however, she can't pick up on the fact that even an hr. rejuvinates a 5 yr. old and keeps them going. As long as she doesn't have an problems sleeping at night with that nap in the afternoon, then what your friends say doesn't matter. All kids are different to begin with, and if she needs that nap, then she does.

Well, children at this age still need a good 12-14 hours of rest. My 41/2 year old takes naps on occassion also still. But he goes to bed here at 7pm and gets up at 6:30 - 7 am.
Shes fine, who cares what others think really now. Its whats best for her, that matters most. And if her body didnt need it, she wouldnt be napping. Just remember that! Your doing a fine job as a mom.

If she is tired let her nap....no problem, as long as she goes to bed at reasonable time at night. They probably look at you in horror thinking if it was their kid napping they would probably be up until midnight!!! That is the case with my son, if he naps during the day he will be up very late at night. Also remember you are not forcing her to nap. i think it is great that she can recognize and accept the fact that she is tired and take a nap. A lot of kids fight it.

hahahaha we have four boys, ages 8,6,6,and 4 and on the weekends all of our kids take naps because they NEED them. our 4 year old takes a nap everyday. lol but see our kids love their nap time. When they are tired they will tell us and they WANT to take naps. Theres nothing wrong with that. Kids go to school mon- fri and get wore out in between with homework, activities and anything else going on. C'mon even adults need naps....nothing wrong with it

It is perfectly normal. My 5 yr old son still takes naps too. He wakes up in a much better mood than he was in before his nap.

It would make sense, if I remember correctly we had a naptime in kindergarten. So she's probably just taking the nap on the weekends if she's used to that schedule during the week as well.
