I think it acceptable to leave a little something for the mailman around the Holidays. I probably wouldn't track him down and hand him money. I don't really see anything wrong with that. Especially if you know the mailman by name (which seems to be a rarity these days).
I just think it's cool that you would even think of it. Not that I'm a mailman or anything, but it seems fairly rare that people would do such nice things anymore.

It is not legal to give money, but most people do. I stick my head out of the door, and make sure there is not an inspector with my mail carrier, fold the bill, and say Merry Christmas. And she puts it in her pocket and says thanks. I used to tip the paperboy, too. Five to ten bucks is normal around here, but some people give more.
My Father was a mail carrier, he got a bottles of booze, boxes of store bought candy, homemade candy and baked goods, and money. Mom and I couldn't wait for one elderly lady to send the pumpkin bread every year, it was good. One lady always sent divinity, and another an expensive box of chocolate covered nuts, she had to order it from a catalogue.
Most mail carriers do not expect to get a present, it really isn't a tip, since your can't assign a real monetary value to what they do everyday, we do not know their salary. . But I can tell you they do appreciate it! So did the paper boy, he always said thanks.

There is nothing wrong with showing your appreciation to people who help make the world go around. I had the same mailman for a couple of years like you. He has to walk up to my door to put mail in my box. During the summer i gave him a tall paper cup full of lemonade or iced tea, or even a cold can of pop. During the winter, hot chocolate or coffee. Sometimes I would even wrap a sweet roll for him. Mailmen can't just stop all the time to take a break. If your mailbox isn't buy your door, leave something like a cash tip, or even a gift card to a fast food restaurant or stand by your mailbox if that's convenient. Believe me, you will be greatly appreciated for this.

You are very kind to think of your mail carrier.
Gifts to postal workers, mail carriers in particular are o.k. I saw a feature on The Today Show around the holidays about this.
I think I remember- no large monetary gifts. Monetary gifts cannot be "large" (this could be considered bribing a public official).
So, something like gift cards to stores or restaurants are o.k. I think monetary tips under $50 would be appropriate.
I suggest a gift card to a nice restaurant. Your carrier can go with his family and have a nice meal.

Ok I'm going to assume that you're tipping them money for services rendered. Because the way you're describing tipping your mailman and your paperboy reads like you're giving them something else if you get my drift. Therefore......if it's money, my answer is no there is nothing wrong with showing your appreciation by giving some type of gratuity to the mailman or paperboy.
Now had you included the milkman in this description of yours, you would have had a problem with me. LOL! :~)

I think that's a very nice and thoughful idea. Give him a tip inside a thank you note. We always tip our mailman at Christmas but, thank you for giving me this idea. A good mailman is worth his weight in gold.

Remember that the guy filling in isn't used to that route and may even have his own route to complete before doing yours, which is probably why he's late. I would verbally thank your everyday mailman and tell him that when he was gone it really made you appreciate him. And hold off on the gift/tip until next holiday season.

People who appreciate good service, tip. You should tip your mail man and anyone else who delivers anything to your door. When you are out at a restaurant, don't you tip for the good service? Same applies with everything else. It is totally up to you what you give and how much. I always tip my mail man and paper boy. My grandmother taught me this practice when she used to tip her mail man, paperboy, and milk man. This is always a nice gesture to let them know you appreciate them. Thank you and GOD bless.

Usally you would give him a tip for Christmas....I know my mail man put a card in my box on Christmas.
Personally, I dont give a tip because I dont feel like I get an extra service......to me its his job. Plus I dont check my mail box everyday so I dont know when he deleivers
U can write him a thank u card for being so good with ur mail and save the tip for christmas

I remember once I left a flower in the mailbox for my mailman. (I was much younger) but I got a note that thanked me for the "very sweet" gesture. I'm sure your loyal mailman would be very touched by a gift, a tip may not be appropriate.
