Same problem my Mother has had...and she is on Synthroid too..and from what I have been able to find out...the weight gain is normal and losing it is just about impossible. We have been looking for something to help, just about in every direction. Including acupuncture....nothing has popped out yet to help. People I have talked to on-line with the same problem, say they gained a total of about 40 pounds over a 2 to 3 yr period and nothing...not the gym, starvation, or detox diets have helped them. The only thing that has helped but not dramatically...is a homeopathic medicine Thyroid Support..from NatraBio...I got it from the drugstore. com ...on line...it seems to have stopped the weight gain...and the hair loss she was having. She hasn't been on it long enough to judge yet about helping her lose any of the weight she has put on. My mother took the radioactive drink to burn out her thyroid, instead of the surgery..She has Graves Disease..if that helps. As for people not being understanding or thinking your not doing your best...tell them to drop dead..in plain english..I am totally sick of that stupid attitude..the weight gain hurts..period...my mothers back, her knee's, and she has developed gout as well...her hands swell so she has a hard time bending her fingers. This is not funny and not some I got fat excuse...because I got a problem with glands...this is real and it is devastating to the people who have it. We are still looking for anything else to help her out, but as of yet..we have found only the homeopathic medicine to take with Synthroid.

did you have hyperthyroidism? is that why you had a thyroidectomy? hyperthyroidism causes people to have high metabolisms, so having a normal TSH level may have caused you to become "normal" and not be able to lose weight as easily as before. or you may just be getting older. if you lost that weight in your early teens - 20s you still may have been growing (so you would need more energy to grow and maintain the same weight), if you are older now (plus 3 yrs) you may have stopped growing and are now just aging - sad part of life - but it happens to everyone.

You should be telling your doctor about your weight gain problems. The kind of advice you might get from the Internet might do you more harm than good.
