This will require you to download two things:
audiograbber from http://www.audiograbber.com/
LAME from http://www.sf.net/

unzip LAME into the directory you install Audiograbber to. From that point, get the settings how you want them (bitrate, keep intermediate wav file, etc). Insert CD. Rip, then encode.

If you use this program instead of others, you don't have to worry about things like DRM (not required to do by law), and will make files that can play on any device (that I've tried so far).

LAME and Audiograbber are both FREE 100% - no nag screens!
WMP will not allow you to make mp3 files above a bitrate like 128, and even then, they are joint stereo (which sounds really bad)

If you have windows on your system then the Windows Media player does the trick.
Run Media player insert the Audio CD and press the Rip tab and start ripping.

Ripping settings can be set in the Tools->preferences.

you can also automatically name the songs by clicking the find info button in the rip tab.

It is the best ripper available.

Yes you can use Windows Media Player.
you just put the cd in, and go to the rip or copy to library tab, and just copy it to your computer. But I think you have to have a mp3 codec for the option to copy in mp3 format.
here is a website where you can buy mp3 plugin for windows media player.

http://www.intervideo.com/products/custom/ms/windowsxp/media_pack.jsp

And, also iTunes will work great for that also.

Windows Media Player

To add to the answer above, you may need to change the default format from WMA to mp3 otherwise you'll obviously get wma output.

It's built into windows media player.

Just pop the CD into the drive and when it auto-runs, pick 'rip to computer' or whatever it calls it.

Tada.

iTunes or Winamp.

But seriously media player will do it just as well, but then you have to support Microsoft which raises many moral issues.
