White cats are surrounded by myth and legend. They are very popular as pets, but started out their popularity a few centuries ago, when they were desired as mousers. Millers used to want all white cats to keep the rodent population down, and they wanted all white because they didn’t show up so dramatically in and around the flour sacks.

All white cats have either blue or golden eyes, or occasionally, odd eyes. While rumors say that all white cats are deaf, this is not true. Geneticists conducted studies in the early 1970’s. Their results were interesting. Of 185 cats checked, 25% had gold eyes and normal hearing; 7% had gold eyes and were deaf; 31% had blue eyes and normal hearing, while 37% were blue eyed and deaf. While it is a problem for some people, it never usually is for the cat. They must be strictly indoor cats, but can be trained to understand hand signals, or lights. This persistent rumor also gave life to the myth that white cats make poor mothers. They were maligned for this, because the odd white DEAF cat couldn't here her babies crying. In actual fact, many deaf cats have compensatory mechanisms to give their kittens all the care they need.

I've never heard of white cats being anything bad. Solid black cats are supposedly bad luck, but that's the only "bad" cat legend that I know.
I do believe the bit about cats being the guardians of the dead, and my husband said he actually saw it with one of my mom's cats in the haunted house we used to live in. The ghost, Luke, was standing in our hallway and Mittens walked through a doorway. Luke didn't notice my husband but turned to look at the cat and then disappeared.

Not that I know of. One of our clinic cats was white with blue eyes and he was very ornery but not a cat of death (unless maybe his own). He was afraid of everything except the huge mean dogs that tried to attack him.

Usually Persian cats that have white fur and blue eyes are deaf. That's true.

You must mean a DEAF cat not a death cat. If so, yes they can be deaf. It is not a legend.

I read the article and it just makes me sick. the same thing is going to happen to china that happened in Europe in the dark ages- they too believed that cats were evil and got rid of them..next thing you know everything was over run by rats that were infested with infected fleas..which led to the bubonic plague..or black death. so..look for china to have plague problems in the next few years.
