I have a Pomeranian who kills his toys....literally. He grabs them by the neck and then lays on top of them. He bites right at the throat and pulses his jaws together like he is sucking the life right out of his stuffed toys. He also makes this soft wimpering noise and closes his eyes while he does it. What is he doing to his toys? Has anyone else seen their dog do this?

My dog is not a puppy, he is 2. He has all sorts of toys....nylabones, pig ears, rawhides, squeaky toys, rubber toys and stuffed toys. He only does this to his few favorites that he carries around with him. They are all larger stuffed toys, that he prefers.

Also, he is not aggressive towards people or other animals, he even gets along with the cat.

Dogs are predatory animals. They like to chase, catch, and KILL prey. The dog views his toys as his prey. It is how he releases his need to be a predator. That is why we give dogs toys, and why they like to play with them. In fact that is why dogs like toys that squeek. The sound is similar to an animal dying. Disturbing, but true.

Yes, our dog does it, and so have the others that we have had. It is their instinct to do this. Since they do not have something live to kill, they will imitate the killing with a toy. As long as he isn't behaving aggressively to people or other animals, I wouldn't worry about it.

buy your dog some quality chew toys- not stuffed animal style squeaky toys- go to the pet store and buy a kong or nylabone product appropriate for your dogs size- your dog will be happier and less stressful

Is he teething? My puppy used to act that way when he was loosing his puppy teeth. I also have another dog that is a toy killer, I just only allow him to play with cheap toys.

My lab "goes to another place of ecstasy" when he rips up his stuffed chew toys. It's normal.

He's doing exactly what you said he was - he's killing them. It's a classic technique for killing prey in the wild. I pity any mouse or rat he gets hold of, it sounds like his predatory instincts are fully active.

There comes a point where the dog isn't playing anymore, but is attacking and even if he's a pomeranian, it's not good to let him do that. He needs to focus on something else less stressful...get him into chewing balls instead, and harder toys, so he cant actually kill them.

Good luck.
