I just moved into my 1983 home. The cabinets have never been refinished. We are considering keeping the wood look but we want to reliven the maple looking stain. Most products says on the label that the surface (which is not a soft kind of wood) needs to be cleaned/washed throughly. We figured soap and water will not do the trick. Also to change the look up on minimal income and for a powerful look, can gel stain work over existing surface without the hassle of lots of sanding?

I used Murphy's oil soap and Scotts Liquid Gold to clean off the grease, grit, grime and dirt. Then to restore the finish without damage you can use Howard's Restore A Finish. It comes in clear or to match the wood tone. I tried using a gel stain over an oak vanity trying to darken the color without good results. It really needed to be sanded down because the gel went over the existing finish unevenly, blotched in some areas and was very dark in others. The Howard's does a wonderful job hiding imperfections like scratches, wipes on evenly and leaves a nice shine. You can find it at the home improvement stores on the paint/stain aisle and it is very inexpensive.

Most kitchens only require a deep clean once every 1 to 2 months, as long as you maintain a good level of surface hygiene day to day. With these tips, cleaning everything inside and out shouldn't take more than a few hours and you’ll have a thoroughly clean, sparkling kitchen to show for it. Commercial kitchens need to be clean at all times so as to ensure that the food there is healthy and free of all sorts of hazardous contamination.

Murphy's is real good for every day cleaning but the best thing I have found for deep cleaning is good ol ammonia and water. Ammonia will make old cabinets look new! Good Luck!
