the first one is mean to the new dog.

How do I stop my original dog from being continually mean to the newcomer?

Your first dog is not the pack leader you are. I have and 8 y.o. dog and I brought a puppy into the "pack" at first the older dog did not want to accept the pup, but I worked with him (they are both male) I introduced the pup by allowing the older dog to sniff the pup, and I layed the pup on his side and continued allowing the older dog to sniff him. After awhile the older dog realized he would not be losing his position in the pack and accepted the dog. The main thing you have to remember is; not to just throw the new dog into the mix. You have to let the older dog sniff the pup. Don't let either of them get overly excited otherwise you will have a fight! Always be in a calm state of mind when you are working with your dogs. My pup is nearly a year old now and is still submissive to the older dog, eventually he will test the older dog and that is when I as the pack leader steps in and have them both submit to me. It's quite simple if your dogs look up to you as a Pack leader you can bring in a rabbit and the dogs will abide to the rules. Remember a calm assertive person will always have better luck training a dog then and aggressive overbearing abusive person.

Dogs are pack animals and your dog sees this newcomer as a threat to his social standing. Make sure that you give your dog praise for being good around the new pup, make sure that your older dog gets fed first, petted first, etc.. so that he will see that he isn't being ousted from his position in the pack.

your first dog needs to have everything done the same way it was before the new dog came along he comes first also try to get them to play together like out side when i got a 2nd and 3rd dog i did this and i had no problem and they all get along if they fight at first your first dog is letting him know his ground good luck let them establish the pack leader if your first dog don't like what the newcomer is doing hell let him know

Are the two dogs the same sex? If so you have a problem, they will fight until one submits to the other.

Pay the same amount of attention to both pets,.This might be helpful. you might want to consider speaking to your vet
