Because they want to listen to their music really loud (as do I). They don't do it to be rude. They just like their music. They are also ignorant about headphones. Headphones suck. Earphones are much better. My earphones go into my ears and block out outside noise, making it easier to hear my music. In addition, no matter how loud I turn up the volume, no one but me can hear the music. So I'm happy, and everyone around me is happy.

I do that at work to block out the annoying noises of my co-workers. In this case, I'm GLAD if they can hear it.
Normally I wouldn't be so rude. It's their fault!
Also, I wouldn't want to be out in public and cripple myself like that. I shudder when I see people out running or walking with headphones. How can they be alert to danger that way?

They have it loud because they are inconsiderate and selfish, I wonder how many of these people will grow up with poor hearing

They're going to go deaf anyway.
Just point at them and laugh hysterically.
Works for me.
