AS many as you can afford

It entirely depends on what your doing with them after you are buying them. If you are buying them and selling them on after a very short period to try and make a profit then you are classed as a trader.

There is no rule that states you are allowed to sell eg 7 cars before your classed as a trader. Buying one to sell at a profit opens you up to all the legalities a trader has to adhere to.

You can buy and sell 6 without having to legally declare your profit to the inland revenue as a second income. Any more, and you are in theory a car trader, and need to pay more tax.

You can buy as many as you like but the problem come when you sell them. Over and above 6 (in profit) per year and you start attracting the attention of the tax office

If you sell at a loss and can prove it then OK but then that might be a very expensive hobby

If you're worried about being classed as a trader the question should have been - how many cars can I sell in a year.

You can BUY as many as you want!

How many number plates is it possible to have each year? That should give you your answer (only if buying new cars).

Otherwise, all of them.

As many as you can afford to buy but i would limit it to 2 cars. 3 is possible but might be pushing it. It also depends on where you get the vehicles from.

If you are talking about buying to sell, check with your local DMV. In California it was 4 a year, beyond that you needed to be licensed.

I don't think theres a limit. If there is, and you have enough money to actually reach that limit each year, just get a dealers license.
