Dont Paint, whatever you do. It never looks good, and the paint never sticks properly to the tile.

Just remove the tiles. Grab a cold chisel and a mallet, and knock it out in the center of the tile, so it doesnt ruin the other tiles around it. If you dont care about tiles, Just hammer them out along the grout lines.

i would highly recommend against the painting the tiles. i've done it and regret it. if you have a lot to remove and have access to a compressor, you can use a pneumatic tile scraper.

if you're only removing a select few, i'd say use a angle grinder with a tile (carbide) blade on it and make hash marks on the tile, then use a chisel to knock the pieces off. if you just hit the tile with a hammer, it will crack, but it will not just fall off because if the mortar holding it up. if you don't make cuts into the tile before you chisel, it's very difficult to remove because the piece has no space to move. you would most likely crack the adjacent tiles.

if you want to remove tiles always wear safety goggles as it only takes one fine ceramic splinter in the eye and you lost the sight ,try and put some strips of masking tape over each tile if your using a hammer and bolster ,this will stop large pieces shooting off,a gentle tap tap with a hammer instead of big whacks too ,if your planning on painting them 1stly make sure they are grease free otherwise the paint wont stick ,2ndly use a good quality tile primer first to get a good surface for the top coat to adhere to ,3rdly use a small sponge roller to coat the tiles evenly ,only using a brush for the edges and corners ,one other thing ,if you have silicon sealant at the bottom of the tiles (where they join a worktop or bath)use a sharp stanley knife to remove this completely ,if your going to paint them you may as well renew it after the tiles are painted for a much fresher look

remove with hammer and chisel (wear eye protection) hit the centre of individual tiles to crack them then chisel the pieces out. If you are re tiling it might be better to consider leaving the old tiles in place and tiling over them,or a cheaper alternative would be to paint the existing tiles with tile paint

place masking tape over the centre of the tile so the drill bit does no longer slip, use a drill with masonary bit and drill a number of holes to the centre and around tile ensuring masking tape is caught down formerly drilling. gently knock the centre of the tile and smash out the tile centre first working outwards, use a small balstor chisel, in case you have a Dremal use this device to shrink out and around tile all the grouting, that would desire to be powerful, if no longer clean off cement utilising previous chisil/balstor and prepare wall for replace tile. in case you're unlucky and crack adjoining tile in this technique use same technique, yet must be much less complicated as you will have greater get admission to in knocking from at the back of the tile. solid success.

the tiles can be removed easily without breaking your back by using a straight hoe, looks like a chisel, but has a handle like a hoe.
hit it hard and the sharp edge will go under easily and you can worry about the remaining glue later. If its grout and mortar, it'll come up easy.
