Because the soil is not very fertile in rainforests, taller trees have developed Buttress roots. These roots give extra support for the tree, which is not able to grow deep rooting systems that such a tall tree would ordinarily grow to stabilize.

Buttress roots are big roots encircling the perimeter of a very tall tree to prevent the tree from falling over.

A tree trunk with a widening base..

Buttresses: the Natural Tree Supports
The towering trees of the rainforests have relatively thin trunks that branch out into a dome-shaped crown of leaves and branches high above the forest floor. These giant trees have to support their own mass as well as the mass of the plants and animals that make their homes on and among their branches. With only 2 inches (5 cm) of topsoil on the forest floor, the trees require additional support. Giant roots called "buttresses" rise up out of the ground next to the trees in the shape of a cathedral.

A buttress is found on the side of a tree at ground level it looks like a fin growing out of the side of the tree and there are usually 3. They add stability to the tree.

Yeah, it is an above-ground part of the root system which helps hold a rain forest tree up. Take a look at this picture:
