She was working, and I was there just helping on and off for a year.
Often we would just gaze at each other and then we could hardly talk to each other.

It depends.If this has made a very deep impact on your heart you will certainly remember.I have had some crushes in the past.I gazed at each one of them for years though we hardly talked.Such things made a strong impact then,but gradually faded in my memory.
